How to decorate a gender-neutral nursery
Forget gender stereotypes and decorate your kids room or nursery in a way that expresses their individual personality. Here are plenty of tips and tricks on how to be gender inclusive when decorating preparing for your little baby’s first bedroom.
A neutral backdrop
A blank canvas is the starting point for any room. But when brainstorming a gender-neutral kids room, have a neutral colour palette in mind to build on. Not only are neutral colours super calming but they have no preconceived connotations. This partially panelled wall adds interest to the neutral scheme whilst also providing a handy shelf to rest accessories on.
Try textures
Neutral schemes lend themselves to Japandi styling, and this wooden panelled wall marks the perfect point of interest in the mostly white gender neutral nursery. A cosy chair for feeding is a must, and this boucle style adds a comforting touch.
Natural materials
Rattan, wicker and natural woods are very trendy this year, and no more so than in a gender neutral nursery space. From storage baskets and laundry storage, to chic wooden shelving and framed prints, there are plenty of options for keeping the natural vibe within the space. What’s more, this means the accessories and motifs on the pieces make more of a statement, and immediately catch the eye.
Animal farm
Animals are huge in nurseries this year, and whether you want to go all out jungle inspired or not, they’ll definitely find their way into your space. Quirky additions like this elephant print wallpaper from Sophie Allport bring a nod to the trend without creating overkill, and the grey will work beautifully within a neutral scheme.
Pops of colour
A gender neutral nursery scheme doesn’t have to be totally devoid of colour though, pops of colour dotted about will attract the eye without creating overkill. Additions such as colourful bunting, framed quotes, books, toys and height charts will all add much-needed brightness to the space.
Special storage
Not only will pops of colour attract the eye, but getting creative with storage will, too! This wicker giraffe is a dominant feature of this nursery space and will be helpful for storing everything from toys and books to nappies and wipes.
