Explore this colourful kitchen in Surrey that marries old and new
These homeowners opened up a series of small rooms to create a bright and joyful pink and green family space with this Surrey kitchen extension as part of a whole house renovation.

As part of a complete renovation of a 5-bedroom house in Surrey, this family turned to Harvey Jones for an overhaul of the kitchen space. The homeowners, having lived in the house with their teenage children for 10 years, decided to knock through the original double galley kitchen layout into the separate living room and another awkwardly-shaped nook, for a brighter, lighter open-plan space.

To honour and enhance the original style the 1930s house, a rich parquet wood floor from John Conran in Esher has been used – the new space bright enough to handle a darker wood finish. On-trend steel framed doors have been used to add a modern touch, which ties in with the painted black furniture chosen for the dining table and kitchen stools.
The colour palette used in this scheme makes for a stand out space. Both painted in Farrow & Ball, the island cabinetry is Smoked Green while the walls use Sulking Room Pink for a grown-up take on the pink and green colour trend. White cabinetry is used on the rear wall, with a mantel across the chimney breast adding to the traditional style of the kitchen.
On the kitchen island, which has storage built-in both on the front and rear, the sink has been situated so that washing up can be done with a view out over the room and out into the garden. A antiqued, mirrored glass is used behind the cooker, meaning the cook can also keep an eye on the room while stood at the range.
The Arbor Kitchen, a classic-inspired inflame Shaker-style kitchen from Harvey Jones, has a luxurious sense of detailing that’s a perfect match for this space. Polished brass handles, knobs and hinges tie in with the finishes of the boiling water tap and range cooker for a cohesive look.
