George Clarke on his collaboration with Sofology
TV presenter and passionate homes enthusiast George Clarke shares an insight into his latest collaboration, where he finds his inspiration and the current projects he’s working on…
How did your collaboration begin?
Sofology approached me some time ago, and I have to say I was honoured. I’ve been lucky enough to design many things over the years, but I’ve never designed a sofa, so as you can imagine it was a big leap of faith for them.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Mainly from history and a lot from nature. I love being inspired by the past to create something new for today, and the future gives me a real buzz. The Midland Hill range I’ve designed is influenced by Art Deco design, while Brantwood has an understated Arts and Crafts feel.
What’s your hero piece?
I love the Brantwood sofa; it’s elegant yet deep and comfortable with simple, clean lines. I have it in my own living room and everyone loves it.

Who are your design heroes?
Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright, Kengo Kuma, Jonathan Ive, David Chipperfield, Peter Zumthor, Terence Conran… I could go on!
What’s the last account you followed on Instagram?
@JapanHouseLdn. I love everything about Japan, from the architecture and food to its culture. I’m also a collector of beautifully handmade knives, and Japanese designs are up there with the best.
Where’s your favourite place to harness creativity?
My garden studio. It’s a haven from the outside world and the perfect space to chill out, think and design.

What advice would you give to aspiring designers?
Never stop drawing by hand, and never stop reading and absorbing.
Can you tell us what you’re currently working on?
It’s the 10th anniversary series of C4’s Amazing Spaces, plus we’re filming series two and three of Remarkable Renovations. There’s also something I’d LOVE to tell you about, but really can’t! So watch this space…
