A loft conversion is one of the best ways of adding more space for your growing family in your existing home, but how do you ensure yours is the right one? Whatever the purpose of your new space, the important things to consider are daylight and fresh air. Take inspiration from these projects, selected by VELUX, the roof window manufacturers, as part of their 2019 Loft Conversion of the Year Awards in partnership with Good Homes Magazine and Grand Designs Magazine.

The winning look

Competition winners Sarah and Jon Lloyd-Foster live in a Victorian semi-detached house in Worsley, Manchester. The couple transformed their existing unused attic space  and crafted it into a wonderful, light-filled master bedroom and en-suite.

The couple wanted  ‘somewhere we could relax and unwind’ and created their very own adult sanctuary by adding a row of glazing using three fixed and top-hung VELUX roof windows, leaving the room awash with daylight but also providing safety for the family’s 3 children. It’s a conversion truly deserving of its accolade as the best of 2019.

Building upwards

There are many reasons to consider a loft conversion. Perhaps you love your home but it’s getting too small for your growing family. Maybe you want more room but planning regulations mean you can’t build an extension outwards. Whatever the reason, converting your loft is a perennially popular way to boost the square footage of living space.

You can add a master bedroom, a playroom for the children, a guest bedroom with en-suite – the possibilities are endless.

The Yiannakis from Northampton transformed their loft into a space for the whole family to hang out in, thanks to the spacious and daylight-filled master bedroom, while the couple also created an en suite and additional airing cupboard. Katherine added: “the amount of additional space we’ve gained from the loft conversion is fantastic.”

The lucky guests of Claire Williams and Sam Roberts in Faversham, Kent, get to take advantage of their fantastic conversion – they transformed their loft into a guest bedroom with en-suite. Using both a dormer and a VELUX centre-pivot roof window has given them both headroom and light galore. Claire added: “The roof window brings in so much more daylight throughout the day and the dormer gives us the extra bit of head height we were looking for as well. Adding another bedroom with an en-suite bathroom has really balanced out the house and helped us take full advantage of the space as a whole.”

The light touch

A conversion is about opening up your house, and a key element of that is daylight. The top of your home is the best way to capture the sun, and all of these projects make great use of bright, airy layouts, utilising a variety of VELUX roof windows.

The Moloney family from Dublin, for example, took a dead space in their 3 bed mid-terrace and turned it into a hub not just for them, but for their beloved cat and dog too. The 4 VELUX roof windows left them: “blown away the by the natural daylight and sense of space they gave.”

In Brighton, the Hammonds injected brightness into their brand new master suite with the inclusion of 5 top-hung VELUX roof windows. The effect is a ‘wall of glazing’ that brings the outside in – perfect for their seaside location. Claire commented: “The high levels of daylight that floods the space from the roof windows also make it such an attractive place to relax in and you can see the benefit it as it travels through to the middle of the house.”

Preaching to the converted

In York, meanwhile, the Jacksons needed more room for their growing family. Their project not only provided them with a new master bedroom complete with en suite bathroom, but also let them transform a first floor box room into a nursery by utilising space from the eaves.

“Our loft conversion has enabled us to open up space we didn’t think we had”, said Patrick, “We now have a bright, airy and luxurious bedroom. We’re so happy with the result.”
