5 top tips for creating a Scandi look on a budget

With an increasing desire for a more minimalistic and functional décor scheme on the rise, we have spotted the Nordic style trend – best known for clean lines, contemporary furniture and textures – gradually increase in popularity and here is how you can embrace this look without investing in designer brands or paying expensive price tags.

1. Be clever with paint

We have moved away from stark white walls and instead, opted for soft shades of green. Painting half the wall is a clever and cost effective way to update a room and create a visual impact. My advice would be to paint the bottom half of the room 3 or 4 shades darker than your existing paint.

2. Use foliage

Cuttings of foliage are less fussy than flowers and can often be found in the garden or on walks, saving on costs. Remember that dried foliage can be just as pretty as living.

3. Upcycle existing furniture

If you are feeling adventurous, why not up-cycle existing wooden shelves or your coffee table with a lick of black paint. Be sure to rub the wood down before you apply the primer and paint. Follow the drying times recommended on the tin. I would recommend Jack Black, Intelligent Eggshell, by Little Greene

4. Opt for neutral furniture

Neutral sofas have a timeless appeal and make a good base for pastel coloured soft furnishings in accents of blue, green and coral.

5. Organise your space

Scandinavian-style is all about pared-back and clutter free spaces. To embrace this simplistic way of living, take inspiration from Marie Kondo’s ‘Konmari’ method of tidying, organising by category and not by location.
