That’s my spot! How to make every seat in your living room a family favourite

It seems that living room squabbles have moved on from the squabble over the remote control.

According to new research from Sofology on living room trends, we’re now much more concerned with where we get to sit.

Claiming a particular spot isn’t just for Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, 75% of us have claimed a select seat in our living rooms where we like to sit.

Sofology’s study found that 22% of families have a ‘Dad seat’, while 19% of us have a designated chair for Mum.

Whether this is the cosiest chair, the perfect angle for the TV or strategically placed next to a side table for drinks and snacks remains to be seen.

It isn’t just families that have dedicated spaces they like to sit in their living rooms though. The study found that 25% of couples would be annoyed if their other half sat in their spot.

The secret to domestic bliss? Ensure every seat is the ‘best’ in the house to avoid arguments.

The key is a living room setup that accommodates multiple needs across all generations, from spots for kicking back to seats for resting, scrolling or watching TV – think modular sofas and moveable furniture (including lightweight side tables).

    Cinema Sofas

If the telly is still a priority for you (remote control squabbling aside), you might be one of the UK homeowners seeking to create the big screen experience at home with a cinema sofa.

Searches for these specialist sofas are up by a whopping 78% since 2023 as we strive to create a sanctuary of entertainment in our own homes.

With individual recliners, heated seats, cup holders and other tech features, it’s no wonder these new additions have risen in popularity.

    Entertaining at home

Post-pandemic we’re taking more opportunities to entertain friends and family – with 50% of us entertaining once a month.

But, where once a gathering at home meant formal dining rooms or kitchen discos, we’re now hosting primarily in the living room.

This is a reflection of the more relaxed approach we have to hosting, and the increase in living room/dining spaces in homes.

Drink trolleys and built-in bars are now more almost commonplace. These are a driving force behind the switch up as they can provide easy entertainment, talking points and somewhere to get a drink!

The rise of the ‘cosy’ living room trend

So what’s next for living room chic? It appears that cosy might be the word describe the future, with searches for ‘cosy living room’ and ‘cosy reading corner’ rising rapidly 85% higher than last year.

This can be reflected in bolder colour choices, from soft pinks to forest greens.

Or replacing the classic living room carpet with warm wood, terrazzo flooring and a large textured rug.

Curves in furniture are still firmly at the forefront for a relaxed and open atmosphere.
