Yellow is having a real moment in our homes and wardrobes right now – sales of yellow sofas are skyrocketing and John Lewis reported a 401% rise in sales of yellow dresses in 2018. So how can you integrate this must-have hue into your home? Below are 7 oh-so-simple room ideas to inspire you to have a sunny disposition this year, whatever the weather.

Brighten your radiators

A two-for-one trick: cover an unsightly radiator and introduce a shot of vibrant yellow in the process. Find a wooden design you like at your local DIY store and pick up a pot of vivid paint while you’re there; a matt emulsion will enhance the modern look. Spend a few hours painting your new purchase, paying special attention to the fretwork. Let it dry completely and fit over your existing radiator.

Add punchy panelling

Panelling is a great way to strike a show-stopping note in a modern or traditional room – it’s one of those decorating features that works with any period of house. Pepper little touches of yellow and orange around the room with cushions, books and flowers (a bowl lemons and oranges are just the ticket) for a cohesive and considered scheme.

Upcyle and uplift with fabric

Let’s throw it back to the Fifties and rekindle our love of the undersink curtain. Pick a design that combines your wall colour with yellow for a more subtle approach, then simply velcro the fabric to the top of the cabinet or the undermount of the sink.

Switch your stair runner

Make a real statement with a luxurious golden yellow stair runner. Soft (and quiet) underfoot, it will instantly upgrade your entrance hallway, especially if you pair it with a matching rug.

Choose just one cushion

Imagine this room without the yellow cushion. It’s still perfectly lovely, but it’s the yellow that makes it extra special. Just one cushy number (ideally in a block colour for impact) has the power to revitalise your whole living room and make you smile every time you walk in.

Revitalise second-hand furniture

Mid-century pieces are absolutely perfect for a yellow makeover, as their smooth lines and sleek shapes can handle a bright, modern hue. Don’t hold back – reach for the brightest, sunniest paint you can find.
